Namely, the last rank on the position 3052 of the world’s universities (15% of the first ranked in the end of 2011) is seriously harmed now with the position 4784. UNZE is still in the top ranked (fourth among B&H universities) but it is much worse ranked than previous years.
Certainly, decline of motivation of employees, rigid attitude towards the UNZE, collapse of public education system in B&H, incompetency in decision making process and others are only some of the elements which led to such a situation at UNZE.
Let us mention only some of B&H universities where UNSA is on position 1739, UNTZ 4114, UNBL 5511, UNDŽBMO 7615, SVEMO 8226, UNBI 11541 and UES 12134.

EIC UNZE:TECHNO-EDUCA 2012 – ROUND-TABLE DISCUSSION ON DEVELOPMENT OF PhD STUDIES AT BH UNIVERSITIES:
 Within the sixth conference Techno-Educa 2012, which marked five years of Entrepreneurship and Innovation Centre of UNZE, there was a round-table discussion on the first day of the conference, on the topic: Development of PhD studies at BH universities. Round-table was officially opened and addressed by Prime Minister of ZDC, MSc. Fikret Plevljak and Rector of UNZE, prof.dr. Sabahudin Ekinović and it was attended by representatives of all BH public universities within the Tempus project Quality Assurance in PhD Studies (holder University of Heidelberg), HERE experts in B&H, deans, vice-deans, teaching staff and others from UNZE. Introductory remarks were delivered by prof.dr M.Avdispahić, rector of UNSA (topic: Experiences in the realization of PhD studies at PMF UNSA), prof.dr S.Marić (Topic: Realization of PhD studies at EtF UNBL-Experiences and recommendations) and prof.dr Darko Petković (Topic: Overview of EU experiences in realization of PhD studies in accordance with Bologna model and expectations at UNZE). After the introductory remarks there was a very meaningful discussion where participation was taken by prof.dr. Jovo Ateljević (UNBL), prof.dr. Hazim Bašić (UNSA), prof.dr. Safet Brdarević (UNZE), prof.dr. Sabahudin Ekinović (UNZE), MSc. Dino Mujkić (WUS Austria), prof.dr Darko Petković (UNZE) and others. General conclusions of the discussion and introductory speakers could be summed up in the facts that PhD study should be primary scientific research and not education, it should not be a slave of solid curriculum but it should be shaped according to PhD students, ECTS system is not adapted to the third cycle, whole doctoral study is impossible to be realized in three years, mobility, involvement of more institutions in organization and internationalisation are essential features of this study, and there is still big problem in financial terms of organization of this study.

NEW RANKING LISTS OF THE WORLD UNIVERSITIES:
New ranking lists of the universities of the world are attached to this information. They are conducted once a year by the famous Shanghaii list and twice a year by Spanish Webometrics.
While Webometrics gives a list of 22 000 universities, Shnghaii list follows only top 500. According to that list, published on 15th August (the list is lead by the University Jiao Tong from Shangaii), the U.S. universities are dominant: among first 10, eight of them are American and two British, and among first 100, 53 of them are from the USA. Tenth time in a row the University of Harvard is the leader without competition. It is very important to mention that there are three universities from Balkans on the list: University of Belgrade on the position 457, University of Ljubljana 474, and University of Zagreb 492. Webometrics list, which is very important for us and which follows and publishes bigger list of universities, ranked the University of Zenica on the position 3152, which is great position if we take into consideration the size and years of existence of the university (within 15 % of ranked universities). The best ranked BH university on this list is the University of Sarajevo on the position 1272,than university of Tuzla 2989, University of Banja Luka 6040., University of Mostar 6213., University“Džemal Bijedić“ 7785, University of Bihać 10994.
Out of the private universities the best ranked is Apeiron from Banja Luka 5942, University of Travnik 10306, University Vitez from Travnik 13850.

TEMPUS PROJECT EQOPP: Study Visit to WU Vienna:
During the realisation of one of the activities within TEMPUS project EQOPP “Equal Opportunities for Students with Disabilities in Higher Education“ (516939-TEMPUS-1-2011-1-BA-TEMPUS-SMHES) representative of the University of Zenica ass. Azemina Durmić, together with representatives of the rest seven public universities in B&H, visited Wirtschafts Universität in Vienna in the period of 6-9 May 2012. The aim of this study visit was to get insight into the examples of good practice in the work with disabled students. Wirtschafts Universität of Vienna has, within the Office of Vice-rector for academic programs and student affairs, two sectors for the support of students with disabilities: Study Services and Disability Commissioner. These sectors have the responsibility to give information and general support to students with individual problems during their studies, but they are also a form of mediator between students and academic staff.
Tempus project EQOPP has the intention to improve the access, satisfy the needs and rights and to improve the experience of studying for students with disabilities at all universities in Bosnia and Herzegovina (motility disorders, hearing impairment, visual impairment, specific learning difficulties, mental disorders, students with disorders of speech-language communication, students at risk such as ethnic minorities, students in academically disadvantaged and low socio-economic status, students with the experience of violence, trauma etc.). Its goal is to support universities of B&H to improve the quality and process of modernisation of higher education by creating institutional capacities and developing policy and practice which will enable all students to study in B&H. One of the key goals of this project is establishment of the Support Office at all universities of B&H, so the visit to WU of Vienna was an important step towards the creation of own regulations and institutional capacities.

VISIT OF THE UNITED STATES EMBASSY DELEGATION TO THE UNIVERSITY OF ZENICA: On Friday, 27thApril 2012, the University of Zenica was visited by a delegation of the Embassy of the United States, represented by Sunshine Ison attaché of culture, Aleksandra Popović – student advisor ahead of the Education USA and American Council, and Paša Lejlić . After the meeting with the rector prof.dr. Ekinović they had a presentation on the opportunities of studying and getting a scholarship in the USA. The presentation “Graduate Programs – Scholarships 101 can be seen here.
We will single out some facts from the presentation:
- everything that reduces total costs of attendence for international students, in broader sense, is considered to be a scholarship;
- concerning the basic requirements for getting a scholarship it is important to know that greater chance have:
- student of technical sciences compared to students of social sciences
- students applying for fall semester compared to those applying for spring;
- postgraduates compared to undergraduates, and doctorants compared to postgarduates;
- there is a greater chance to get a scholarship of a private university than public one;
The time for application is from November till March.
Concerning the financial help there is difference between: Fellowships, Grants and Assistantships.
- Fellowships are offered at the beginning of postgraduate studies, and do not imply any work obligation towards the faculty, it is awarded at advanced level (for specific rsearch) and the annual amount is between 1000 and 15000 $(rarely over 20000), which is enough to cover life costs, and smometimes they cover tuition fees.
- Grants are awarded to students who work on special projects, the amount is about 3000 $ and covers everyday needs
- Assistantships are the best type of financial aid intended for assistants at faculties, who besides receiving a salary have the advantage that their tuition fee be“forgiven“ or do not have to pay a great part of it. They are obliged to work maximum twenty hours per week, and minding that there are various assistantships, it should be mentioned that the most popular are Teaching Assistanship-TA and Research Assistanship.
How to get assistantship status? You should find a university and a professor and contact him/her directly by e-mail. It is recommended that you emphasise the readiness for an interview.
Those who are interested in studying in the USA should carefully explore the options, apply to at least 5 universities and have good results on GRE or GMAT and TOEFL tests.
Test GRE (Graduate Record Exam) can be taken three times a year in Sarajevo. The book for the preparation of the exam is available at the American Corner, the City Library in Zenica, and if other information is needed they should contact the Embassy in Sarajevo. Regardless the study they want to enrol students should pass this test, except those enrolling the Law or Economy.
- Test GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test) is taken by students who want to enrol the study of law or economy.
Test TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) can be taken three times a week in Sarajevo.
- Out of the programs financed by the US Government we emphasise Fulbright Student Program intended to students who have enrolled master or doctoral study, who need to do a research, and this program enables them the access to libraries. All costs are covered, which means that they are completely financially secure, even the costs of taking TOEFL test are covered for those selected by the Embassy after the second round of reading of received applications. According to the previous experiences the Commission in Washington usually confirms the selected candidates by the Commission in Sarajevo. Deadline for applications is 25 June 2012. The application is simple but three professor recommendations are needed.
- We want to emphasise a very interesting program E-Teacher, which offers online classes, and the only condition is internet access. Students get the password and user word and achieve direct communication with the appropriate university. The application for this program will soon be available on the site of the United States Embassy in Sarajevo.
We want to emphasise that students can find many scholarships available, and a good source of information is site www.educationUSA.info, but also www.educationusa.state.gov and www.ac-see.org.
The team of the US Embassy in Sarajevo is at disposal to all interested students!
International Cooperation Office of the University of Zenica wishes to thank Sunshine Ison, Elizabeta Delalić, and Aleksandra Popović for their visit and presentations.
